Aukje Koks – Aukje Koks is a visual artist living and working in Antwerp and Brussels, Belgium, since 2010. In 2002, Aukje Koks graduated from St Joost Academy of Arts in Breda. Her artwork has received recognition, including the Royal Award for Painting in 2005, the Wolvecamp Prize for Painting in 2012, and a nomination for the Illy Prize in 2012. She furthered her education by studying at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam from 2007-08 and completed residencies at Wiels in Brussels, Prague, and Vienna (Sammlung Lenikus), as well as a residency at Woning van Wassenhove/Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Belgium in 2019. Aukje Koks has exhibited her work at notable venues such as GEM/Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Stigter van Doesburg Gallery in Amsterdam, Centre d'Art Contemporain Chanot in Clamart, Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, Wiels in Brussels, MOT International in Brussels, Fonderia Artistica Battaglia in Milan, Maison Grégoire in Brussels, Mains d'Oeuvres in Saint Ouen, Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam, and the Nubuke Foundation in Accra. Her artistic practice has been supported by a.o. the Flemish Government, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and the Mondriaan Fund. Her work is in several collections, among others Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, Museum Voorlinden in Wassenaar, Centraal Museum in Utrecht, Central European Bank in Frankfurt, ING Bank, De Nederlandsche Bank and private collections.

With the exhibition RUPTURE, Arjan van Helmond has invited a number of artists in whom he recognises the embodiment of this attitude. He brings together artists who each use their experiences or memories in a distinctive way to approach seemingly mundane matters from a new perspective. Just as staring into the darkness or emptiness sometimes conjures images that aren’t real, the exhibited works evoke perceptions, associations, or hallucinations out of nothingness that can emotionally affect us. RUPTURE is about personally forcing a rupture with the existing, forcing a crisis or change to achieve a fundamental transformation.

The work Undertones by Aukje Koks is a silkscreen print with a photo print on paper, A2 size.

This print, created as an assignment for a Wiels auction in 2012, is derived from a previously made painting, also titled Undertones, but that one is an actual Venetian blind with a painting (oil on canvas) behind it.

The work, featuring a glove in an interior space, conveys a certain intimacy. By printing the Venetian blind as a silkscreen over a photo print, layers are added. The Venetian blind has a voyeuristic quality, and the hand reaches for something behind a wall that is invisible. At the same time, a part of the Venetian blind is omitted. Aukje Koks finds the silkscreen technique particularly beautiful, as its inherent transparency due to the raster effect adds a subtle intimacy to the image.
